Getting started

My wife Meagan organises a walking group for mums and plays softball, so because she is already very active, she’s taken up the role of team leader to make sure we stay motivated even when we’re busy or feeling tired.

I’ll keep you posted on our progress and I look forward to hearing stories of how you and your family are tackling the Premier’s 30-minute Challenge!

    Dear Minister,

one can only hope that the bid to stay fit also recognises the role of ‘dog walking’ as part of this endeavour. Dog owners represent 40% of Australian households, yet councils consistently fail to acknowledge the role of pets in our society. May I respectfully suggest that the ‘Active Families Challenge’ also be a clarion call in that councils are required to provide sufficient off leash areas, and to celebrate the health benefits that pet owners derive from their animals. Far too many disparage the scientific evidence and merely see Animal Management Plans as a ruse towards revenue raising. Draconian and inflexible policies run counter to societies which desire fit citizens and the promotion of tolerance and harmony within communities.

Welcome, Minister. I readily applaud the Active Family Challenge initiative. Unfortunately I have no family of my own but I am with you in spirit as I set my own 30-minute challenges.

It is great to see the Government leading by example, and pleasing to see sportspeople abound, defend the rights of people to use a public park whether in numbers or solitary for anything that gets people upwardly mobile! (Recent bad publicity for Glen Eira Council threatening parents with fines for exercising their children in a park reserved for user pays mentality)

I do hope Minister, that your hat of Sport and Recreation is taken into account when lobbying occurs for the hand back of Caulfield Race Course to its people as underutilised Crown Land, from the MRC.

In Glen Eira (and Stonnington) a massive piece of green open space is being hoarded for the use of a selective racing fraternity! This needs to change, and with your help and input, sport and recreation can be undertaken to the mutual benefit of all Victorians!

Have I heard of a man who actually listens to his wife? We should frame you Minister James Merlino…..a rare specimen indeed! Good luck with the ongoing work Meagan!

    Hi Uncle James,
Mum, dad, Tom and I have joined the challenge. We’re having a great time excercising together. The boys are netball training with mum and I and we are doing footy training with them. Mum and I are going to do some bike rides on the Warburton Trail and we also do walks around Lilydale Lake.
Tell Premier Brumby that this challenge is a great idea and lots of fun!!!
Give Sophie a kiss for me and say hi to auntie Meagan.
    From Smelly Melly : )
